What is lye?
Black Sea lye is a final product of the classic salt production process—through the evaporation of seawater. In Bulgaria, classic salt production takes place in the salt pans of Burgas (Atanasovsko Salt Lake) and Pomorie (Pomorie Salt Lake). In these unique lakes, the water has a much higher salinity than seawater, and locals still call it “rapa.” In addition to higher salinity, these waters have a very rich organic and mineral composition. It is precisely this saltier water from the lakes that fills the salt pans (which look like pools), also called “pans,” where the natural process of evaporation of the sea (lake) water begins. Salt (sodium chloride NaCl) crystallizes and settles at the bottom of the salt pan, forming a salt layer of about 8-12 cm. What remains above the crystallized salt is a thick, oil-like liquid with a brownish-red color and a slight smell of hydrogen sulfide, extremely rich in magnesium salts (Mg), which constitutes the Black Sea lye. After the salt crystallizes, the lye is pumped from the salt pan into other special basins, where it is stored for further use. In this way, we obtain two extremely valuable natural products that we all know very well—namely, sea salt and lye.
As it is a natural product, the color and smell of the lye can vary depending on rainfall and temperature throughout the year. The lye “ripens” and is suitable for medical use (so-called medical, therapeutic lye) in the period of August – September, when it reaches a certain density and quantitative composition of active substances. The unique healing properties of the lye are due to its rich mineral and organic composition. In terms of biological active substances, it contains all the components of seawater and rapa, but in a many times higher concentration. Its composition is similar to the healing Pomorie liman mud extracted from the lake of the same name, which is why it has similar effects and therapeutic properties.
The main elements contained in the lye are magnesium, calcium, sodium, chlorine, bromine, sulfates, bicarbonates, many trace elements, organic substances, and others in very large quantities. For this reason, it is considered more valuable and beneficial than Dead Sea salts, and it is gentler on the skin as it has a pleasant, oil-like consistency. The highest content is of magnesium salts – magnesium chloride (MgCl2) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). Magnesium is an extremely important element for many processes in the human body. It is necessary for energy production in cells and the acceleration of metabolism, plays a major role in the balance of the nervous and muscular systems, reduces muscle pain and protects against cramps, and has a beneficial effect on hair, skin, and nails. Stress and fatigue (physical or mental) deplete magnesium from the cells in the body. Therefore, after physical or mental exertion, it is necessary to provide the body with a sufficient amount of this valuable mineral.

ANCHIALO Stabilized Black Sea Lye
After extracting the lye from the salt pans and before incorporating it into final cosmetic products, it undergoes a mandatory processing process, known as stabilization and filtration, which guarantees its safety and the long-term preservation of its extremely beneficial properties. The final product “Stabilized Black Sea Lye” is ready for direct use or as a base for making our massage gels, oils, and more. The color and smell (in some cases sharp) are natural and vary depending on the year and month of extraction. The highest content is of magnesium (MgCl2 and MgSO4), which is entirely naturally derived, making the product unique and extremely valuable. As is well known, magnesium is best absorbed by the body through the skin.
Application of the lye:
Compresses – compresses soaked in lye, warmed to about 40 degrees in a water bath, are placed on the problem areas. For people with hypertension, the lye should not be warmed. Leave the compress on for about 15-20 minutes.
Frictions – rub the body with lye using a friction sponge. After 5-10 minutes, rinse thoroughly with water without using soap or shower gels.
Bath – about 5 liters of the solution is poured into 80L of water at about 38 degrees Celsius. The procedure lasts about 15-30 minutes, after which the body is washed thoroughly with water without soap or shower gels.
Massage – local or full-body massage with our massage gels and oils containing lye.
